How do I make my hair stand up dry (without gel etc.) as a mini afro?

My hair is very thick/full and straight. no matter how long it is once i wash my hair it lays flat on my head (besides the frizz).It's prolly about 1.5-2 inches long on the top and faded on the sides. I've been gelling it up like messy spikey and today when I woke up n did a few things before i got a shower the gell was out of my hair and it kinda stood up like a mini afro (it was hot) how do i train my hair to do this? I like the natural (no gel/ moose/ hairspray) look while still having it stand up.

you could try sleeping with it out, dont brush it too much and try sort of teasing it after u wash it
