We had a new furnace installed this year and it set off our smoke detectors. The installer was there and indicated that it was normal as well as the smell. After about 30 minutes the smoke detectors settled down and there has been no smell or detector problem since. With respect to the flame colour, I would wait for a while until the new dryer has been used for several cycles. Oil and residue from the manufacturing is probably burning off the hot surfaces which will cause the yellow tips on the flame. If the yellow persists with time then a call for service may be warranted
